Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary healthcare profession that focuses on treating the underlying cause of disease and illness through supporting the body’s self-healing capabilities. Treatment plans encompass a blend of modern scientific research and traditional forms of healing that are individualized to reach each patient’s health goals. Naturopathic medicine plays an important role in integrative health care, and treatments can be used on their own or together with conventional medicine. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are general family practitioners, and are trained to integrate standard laboratory testing and findings on physical examination with a broad range of natural therapies. At Juniper Family Health, our doctors will take the time to provide thorough assessments and comprehensive health guidance, in a caring and compassionate environment.

Treatments Offered by Naturopathic Doctors:
Naturopathic medicine is truly integrative. At Juniper Family Health, our doctors can recommend a wide range of natural medicines, and can also prescribe pharmaceutical medications when required.

Clinical Nutrition: Therapeutic diets and nutritional supplementation are used to treat underlying nutritional deficiencies, support body systems, and prevent or in some cases reverse progression of disease.
Botanical Medicine: Herbal medicines including capsules, tablets, tinctures, teas and topical preparations are used to restore health.  Click here to learn about herbal compounding.
Lifestyle Counseling: Diet, exercise, sleep and stress management are addressed to promote sustainable health and longevity.
Detoxification: Education on how to minimize toxic exposures combined with treatments such as saunas, hydrotherapy, nutritional supplementation, and botanical medicines are used to improve the body's natural elimination processes.
Bioidentical Hormones: Structurally identical to hormones produced naturally by the human body, bioidentical hormones are a safer alternative to the synthetically modified hormones that have been used in the past with Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).
Prescription Medicines: In 2010, the BC government granted NDs prescriptive drug rights; pharmaceutical medication is prescribed when needed.
Acupuncture: Specific acupuncture points are selected to help re-establish balance in the body. Click here to learn more.
Allergy Desensitization: A small dose of allergen solution is taken under the tongue in a series of treatments to improve allergic symptoms by reducing the body’s sensitivity to the allergen.
Injection Therapies: Intramuscular (IM) and intravenous (IV) injections of high dose vitamins and minerals are used to treat deficiencies, improve energy, aid detoxification, and support immune function. Click here to learn more about IV nutrient therapy.
Laboratory Testing Offered by Naturopathic Doctors:
At Juniper Family Health, our doctors offer a variety of laboratory services to help ensure that your visit and treatment plan are as comprehensive as possible.

Food allergy & sensitivity testing
Environmental allergy skin prick testing
Female and male hormone analysis
Adrenal stress hormone analysis
Comprehensive thyroid testing
Celiac disease testing
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) testing
Lactose intolerance testing
Comprehensive digestive stool analysis
Blood sugar testing
Cardiovascular screening
Pregnancy tests
Urine analysis
Nutritional deficiency testing
Regular annual screening panels (Life Labs)
PAP testing
Training and Regulation of Naturopathic Doctors:
In British Columbia, naturopathic physicians are licensed and regulated by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC). For licensure, naturopathic doctors must complete a university undergraduate degree followed by a four-year naturopathic medical program. NDs also complete 1500 hours of clinical training in addition to coursework, and must pass board exams in order to be licensed in the province.

Does Insurance Cover Naturopathic Care?
Most extended health care plans cover naturopathic services, usually between $200-$500 per year. The provincial MSP plan does not currently cover naturopathic care, except limited coverage for individuals on Premium Assistance.

Natural Fertility

Whether you have just started to plan for a family, or have been trying to conceive for some time, naturopathic medicine can help you optimize your health, and by doing so improve fertility and pregnancy outcomes! Naturopathic fertility care involves natural non-invasive treatment strategies that target the underlying cause of your fertility struggles. Our naturopathic doctors use individualized treatment plans that can include the use of vitamins and minerals, herbal medicines, bioidentical hormones, acupuncture, and diet and lifestyle counselling.

Preconception Care

Preparing for optimal fertility and a healthy pregnancy starts in the preconception period, 3-6 months prior to conception. Our fertility program will help you start out on a healthy path by incorporating some basic lifestyle changes and natural health solutions to get your mind and body ready for the exciting new stage ahead!

Preconception Planning with our Naturopathic Doctors Includes:

  • Optimizing nutrition
  • Decreasing toxin load
  • Discontinuing hormonal birth control or IUD
  • Stress management
  • Optimizing BMI
  • Basal body temperature charting
  • Preconception laboratory testing
  • Regulating menstrual cycles and supporting ovulation
  • Addressing and treating any underlying health concerns
During this stage, the goal is to help you feel as vibrant and healthy as possible before moving into the exciting next stage of pregnancy. If the mind and body are in balance, it is easier to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy to term. It is important to recognize that it takes two to get pregnant, so a healthy lifestyle program should be incorporated for both partners!

Fertility Treatments Offered by Naturopathic Doctors:

If you are having problems achieving or maintaining a pregnancy, our naturopathic doctors can help restore balance to your reproductive system, and naturally treat the underlying factors that may be impeding positive fertility outcomes. A comprehensive health intake, assessment, and laboratory work will help to uncover the root cause of your fertility struggles.
Common fertility concerns addressed by naturopathic doctors include:
  • PCOS and anovulatory cycles
  • Endometriosis
  • Poor Ovarian Reserve
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Luteal phase defect
  • Male factor infertility (low sperm count, motility or morphology)
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Unexplained infertility
‘Unexplained Infertility’ is a term used when conventional diagnostic procedures cannot determine the underlying cause of fertility concerns. Naturopathic doctors can diagnose and treat some of these factors that impede a couple’s fertility including:
  • Stress hormone imbalance
  • Food intolerance or sensitivity
  • Heavy metal toxicity
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Immunological factors
  • Sex hormone imbalance
  • Infection

Assisted Reproductive Technologies & Integrative Fertility Care

If you are seeking IVF or IUI, an integrative approach that uses a combination of conventional medicine and evidence based natural medicine will help to improve your success rates. The use of naturopathic medicine during ART helps to reduce stress, improve blood flow to the uterus to optimize implantation, reduces side effects of medications, and enhances egg and sperm quality.
Acupuncture in particular has been shown to significantly increase IVF success rates when performed regularly leading up to IVF treatment, as well as immediately before and after embryo transfer. Antioxidant supplementation with specific naturopathic neutraceuticals have also been shown to improve IVF success. For optimal outcomes, these treatments should start 8-12 weeks leading up to your IVF cycle to best prepare the body.
